Galway Bat Group

The Galway Bat Group is a local group of volunteers based in County Galway who aim to increase awareness of bats and their requirements. We host bat walks and talks through the summer session providing a fun and family friendly way to learn about Irish Bat species, their habitats and their protective status. We also take part in local community engagement work  via heritage events such as Family Fun Days at Aughnanure Castle, Go Wild in Galway City and participate in local school initiatives helping students make their school more bat friendly.

In addition to our local community engagement work, we also participate in brown long eared bat surveys at a site near Gort and as part of the group’s ongoing training, we hosted various training events such as BCI BATLAS 2020 to ensure all our volunteers are up to speed with new methodologies and equipment.

The Galway Bat Group committee (2016-2017) is currently composed of Ger O’Donohoe (Chairperson), Una Nealon (Secretary), Caitriona Carlin and Margaret Flaherty (Co-treasurers and development officers), and Heather Lally (Communications officer).
